Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)

The pastoral welfare of students is of paramount importance at Harrow Chongqing. Students who are safe, happy, healthy and cared for are the focus of daily life. The school works closely with parents and carers to support every child as they progress from childhood to young adulthood. In the Lower School, the class teacher provides a safe, nurturing environment and may seek guidance from phase leaders or the senior leadership team for more complex issues. In the Upper School, form tutors coordinate welfare support with a Housemaster or Housemistress, and the form tutor registers the class each day to provide welfare guidance alongside academic monitoring. Through small tutor groups and a strong House system, each student is known by name and receives personalised care, support and guidance.

English as an Additional Language (EAL)

The curriculum is bilingual and bi-cultural. Core CNC elements such as Biology, Chemistry, English, ICT, Mathematics, and Physics are delivered in English. Language Studies, Moral Education, History, Geography and Chinese Cultural Studies are taught in Chinese. 70% of instruction is in English, including English, Mathematics, Science, Computer Science, Physical Education, Art and Design Technology and Music. 30% of instruction is in Chinese, including Chinese language, Calligraphy and Culture, History, Geography and Morality. The Harrow Innovation Leadership Academies in China use English extensively to teach compulsory content and employ a predominantly international teaching staff to deliver a globally aware curriculum.

Mental Wellbeing

Mental wellbeing is supported through a robust pastoral system that places welfare at the heart of school life. Welfare is a primary consideration in daily school life so that students feel safe, happy and healthy. In the Lower School, the class teacher provides a safe, nurturing welfare environment and may seek guidance from phase leaders or senior leaders for more complex issues. In the Upper School, form tutors coordinate welfare with a Housemaster or Housemistress, and welfare guidance runs alongside academic monitoring. Small tutor groups and the House system provide personalised care and a network of support, with staff knowing each student by name. The Head of Pastoral Care and Boarding oversees welfare across the school.

Harrow Chongqing is committed to safeguarding and the promotion of the welfare of children. Safeguarding is the primary responsibility of all members of the Harrow Chongqing community, including parents, and is based on UK Children Acts and international rights.
